Notes for WILLIAM LIDDICOAT:
Death: No record can be found of William's death in Cornwall. Jane is shown in the census of Cornwall as a widow, but on her death certificate it states that she is the widow of William Liddicoat, iron miner.Iron ore was extracted from iron ore found around the County. One such place was at Big Perhaver near to Gorran Haven where a quay was built for sailing vessels to take on their load of iron ore. The ore was sent down over the cliff to the waiting sailing vessels by means of a large bucket running on a hawser. It would appear that it wasn't a viable propositions as it only lasted a few years. Part of the quay is still vissible at Big Perhaver beach on low water where it forms part of a rock.
Marriage: Witness at the marriage were Josiah Lyddicoat and P Merifield

Notes for RITA ISABEL LIDDICOAT:
A Small tribute to my Great Mother
Rita Isabel Liddicoat was born in the cottage at the top of Church Street called Mt. Zion Cottage on 13th December 1913, she went to school at Gorran when she was well enough.
Her father Edwin Liddicoat died when she was only 20 years old. Rita suffered with asthma and bronchitis from her childhood days for nearly all her live. Rita was given just 16 years to live with that condition by the Doctor.
Rita met Charles Whatty and they were married in Liskeard Methodist Chapel on December 24, 1938 and set up home at Reedy Mill, near Liskeard. War had started and in February of 1941 they had a son John.
Many happy hours were spent with mother as a child collecting and noting the different names of flowers and the different types of birds that frequented the area. We used to rear a pig each year during the war years and I remember on one occasion we were going out and mother asked father to put the pig in the pigsty. Father went out in the orchard and tried to coax the pig back to the sty. Every time father tried to get the pig back to the pigsty the pig would go the opposite way around the apple tree. When mother came out she asked father why he was taking so long, father by this time was getting annoyed. Mother picked up the bucket she used to feed the pig with, rattled it and said come on. The pig came running straight into the pigsty. We often had to laugh about it.
She took a keen interest in what was happening at school and the children and myself were always interested when she told a story. The words relating to the story she read, the pictures she put her own words to making it interesting to listen to. It was nothing to have six of us plus adults all listening to her.
Mother and father moved to Liskeard to live and work, it was a town and none of us liked it, another move to Doublebois and to neighbors who were a joy to be with. Mother and father left Doublebois to live in Mevagissey, the place where father was born. Mother and father finally returned to Gorran Haven to live in Portheast Way the village mother was born in.
Mother was a staunch Methodist and it was only when she was ill that she failed to go to chapel, and then she always asked either Winnie or Sylvia what had taken place, how many people were there etc. Mother loved it when the children and great grand children came around to see her, the great grandchildren affectionately gave her the name of Granny pasty. They always seemed to like her pasties somehow.
Mother loved her garden, if anyone called they were always given a tour and plants were given to the person being shown around if they said that they liked it.
Mother also loved all the birds that came to visit the garden, and they always seemed to know when she went to the kitchen. The blackbirds were the first to arrive at the window asking for sultanas, thrushes weren't far behind along with sparrows, the birds taking them from her fingers.
Mother was a member of the retirement club and enjoyed the friendship that it gave, Saturday afternoons on the other hand were spent playing scrabble in her own house with Sylvia.
Mother enjoyed going on outings arrange by either Isabel or Catherine to old houses, gardens or to places like Truro.
Mother was always there when you wanted her, nothing was to much trouble,
She was a mother,
Think what a mother should be,
She was that.
I shall miss her
God bless her

Notes for CHARLES WHATTY:
Charles when he was young worked in his father's barbers shop. He passed his examination to go to Grammar school, but owing to his father being unable to pay, he had to stay at Mevagissey School left Mevagissey and went to work for his brother Joseph at Polperro in the bake house. He met Rita Liddicoat and they were married at Liskeard. His first work place after being married was with Corrin's at the flour mill near St Keyne station near Liskeard, they lived in a tied cottage at Ready Mill about one mile from his work. On leaving Corrin's he went to work for Issac's coal yard situated at Liskeard railway station. Charles and his wife left the tied cottage and moved to Dean Street Liskeard where he got work with Beswetherick who owned the fruit and vegetable shop beside the house they lived in. He worked for a few days in the shop each week and the rest of the time he worked on Beswethericks farm near Doublebois. Charles left Beswethericks to work for Blamey and Morcome at their stores at Doublebois, they move to 1 The Terrace Doublebois. He became manager of the store selling cattle feed coal and oil. Sadly Blamey and Morcome went bankrupt and Charles and Rita moved to Mevagissey working for John Furse in the Bark House selling summer goods to visitors. At the end of the season they moved back to Gorran Haven to live with Rita's sister Florence Dyer. They had a bungalow built at Porth East Way Gorran Haven.
